Late Friday, November 13th, scores were killed and many more wounded when coordinated attacks on civilians in Paris left a nation in shock and a world in mourning. Simultaneously, explosives were detonated and gunfire rang out at an athletic stadium, concert hall, and sidewalk cafe. I, like yourself, was riveted to the television as reports and images of the terror came across the screen. My heart went out to the families and friends that lost loved ones, as it did for the countless number of survivors who will have to live with these dire memories. For all those directly and immediately effected by the carnage, their lives will never be the same.
How does the Lord respond to such senseless acts of brutality and murder? According to Genesis 6:5-6, at the time when “…the wickedness of mankind was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually,” God’s heart was broken. Verse 6 states, “…it grieved him at his heart.”
This reminds me of the time Yeshua learned of the death of his good friend Lazarus. When he arrived at the tomb where Lazarus was placed we read that “Yeshua wept” (John 11:35). And those who observed Yeshua’s reaction commented, “Behold how he loved him!” (vs. 36). That’s how the Lord responds to those who have been so effected and victimized. He loves them and his heart breaks for them and with them.
And his heart is broken for those suffering in the aftermath of the Paris massacre. Together let us pray for the victims, let’s pray for family members and friends, let’s pray for those entrusted with bringing the perpetrators to justice, let us pray for France and our world. “Solidarite”
