Shavuot (Feast of Weeks) also known as Pentecost occurred 49 days (seven weeks) after the first Sunday after Passover (Leviticus 23:15). It was a harvest festival in which the first-fruits (wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olive oil, and honey) were brought to the Temple as an offering to the Lord. It was one of the three pilgrimage festivals (along with Passover and Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles) when all Jewish men were required to “go up” to Jerusalem to worship the Lord (Deuteronomy 16:16). According to rabbinic tradition, Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Law to Israel on Mount Sinai although no biblical texts make this connection. In the B’rit Hadasha (New Testament), it was on Shavuot that the congregation of believers was created by means of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) (Acts 2:1-4).
