My dear special sisters in Yeshua,
Recently I have been exploring ways to further embrace our identity in Messiah, enabling each of us to experience the ultimate relationship with Yeshua. Among other foundational Biblical truths, this relationship needs to be built upon three principles: we belong to God; we are a blessed child of God; and we are God’s perfect workmanship. There is so much to say about each of these Biblical principles; therefore, I have been led to write a three part mini-series. This week our focus will be on the truth that…
We Belong To God
For all of mankind the question begs, “Who am I?” Put simply and foremost, we belong to God; we are His. For us to be growing in fruit, we need to possess a clear identity about our intimate relationship with God. Our theme verse will be 1 Corinthians 6:19b-20a which says: “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” Let’s spend a few minutes this week uncovering what it means to belong to God. For me it means three things. First, belonging to God means that we are valuable to God. Our value comes from the fact that we are made in the image of God; hence we are God’s image bearers. Genesis 1:26 says, “Then God said, let us make man in our image, in our likeness.” When we were created in the image of God it means that there are different aspects and components of who we are that reflect the image of God: Our physical being, our emotional being, our spiritual being, and our intellectual being.
Second, we are valuable because of the cost it took to redeem us. 1 Peter 1:18-19 says: “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Messiah, a lamb without blemish or defect.” Hence, an incredible price was paid for us!
Finally, we are valuable because God loves us. God does not love us because we are valuable; we are valuable because God loves us! God loves us because we are His creation and He wants us to intimately know Him, love Him, and glorify Him. God loves us the way we are, but He loves us far too much to leave us in our former condition when we were separated from Him, prior to putting all of our faith and trust in His Son Yeshua.
A story is told of a man who was traveling in Paris who came upon a rather inexpensive amber necklace in a gift shop. Upon returning to the states he was curious as to the value of the necklace so he took it to be appraised. After looking at the necklace under a magnifying glass, the jeweler said, “I will give you $25,000 for it.” So surprised was the man, he asked that another expert appraise the necklace. When he did, the owner of the necklace was offered $10,000 more above the original appraisal. “What do you see that is so valuable?” asked the astonished man. The appraiser responded, “Look through the glass.” There before his eyes was an inscription: “To Josephine from Napoleon.” The value of the necklace came from its identification with a famous person. As women of faith we are identified with the One who is far more valuable and esteemed than any human on earth. It is from our union and association with God that we find our true identity, worth and value.
To belong to God also means that we are under new management. When we see those words over the door or in the front window of a place of business, certain thoughts and impressions come to mind. We invariably know that this business has experienced a positive change. As believers who belong to God, we are under new management; we are under the Master’s leadership. This change of ownership should produce vast differences; all of them for the better – we are a new creation! Little remains the same after Yeshua takes the reins of our lives…at least that is the way we hope it to be.
Please set aside some time this week to look up the following scripture verses and mediate upon its impact in your personal walk with the Lord. Before each of these following four statements, preface them with…Because we belong to God:
We should make Messiah the pattern of our lives (Romans 13:14a).
We should be practicing a new lifestyle (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Our desires should be toward the things of God (Matthew 6:33a).
Our old way of living should be a thing of the past (Ephesians 4:22).
To accomplish these things we need to submit ourselves to God’s leadership (James 4:7a). This means spending daily time with God so that we will know and understand His desires for us; we will be in-step with our Lord. Belonging to God means that we are valuable. We are valuable because we are God’s image bearers, because of the cost it took to redeem us, and because God loves us. Belonging to God also means that we are under new management. We are a new creation reflecting the positive changes in our lives, as we submit to the Master’s leadership over our lives.
Let us be reminded that in spite of our anxieties, fears and uncertainties…you and I belong to God. In spite of our brokenness, we belong to God. God calls us by name and we are His! And He is with us always to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Together let us give all praise, honor and glory unto Him. This devotional was inspired by one of my favorite songs “Who Am I?” by Casting Crowns. I invite you to download this song on You Tube and receive the blessing of the words written.
Grateful for being His for all eternity,
